Onam is by far the biggest festival celebrated in Kerala. It marks the homecoming of their legendary King Mahabali and lasts for about ten days. It usually falls during the first month of the Malayalam calendar (August-September). This festival is linked to many elements of Kerala’s culture – like the intricate flower carpets (Pookolam), elaborate lunch (Onasadhya), snake boat races and traditional dances.
Traditional Pookolam for Onam that adorns every house in Kerala
According to legend, King Mahabali’s rule was a golden period for Kerala. All the citizens were happy and prosperous. He was so highly respected that he was considered almost equivalent to the King of Gods, Indra. In order to restore the balance and establish only one God-king, Lord Mahavishnu assumes the form of a dwarf (Vaamana) and tricks the King into the Underworld. But every year, on Onam day, the king revisits his people and celebrates the harvest with them.
It is to welcome the King and celebrate his homecoming that Onam is celebrated with grandeur and feasting all over Kerala.
