TheCommonwealth Games 2010 inauguration ceremony that took everyone’s breath away had the Prince of Wales and the President of India declaring the games open.
The Jawaharlal Nehru stadium was packed with an eager crowd of nearly 60,000 while many more witnessed the ceremony on their TV as the national channel Doordarshan sent out live telecast. There was a breath taking play of fireworks that was worth every pie of the $9 million that it had cost.
The ceremony included cultural performances by the school kids as well talent from every corner of India. Singer Hariharan performed the ‘Swagatam’ song with school children forming the ‘namaste’ on the ground. The grand finale was given by Oscar winner AR Rahman performing live CWG anthem “Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto”.
Prince Charles and President of India Pratibha Patil together declared the Games open at the ceremony today having come to a convenient compromise after initial hiccups about who will inaugurate the CWG.
The Queen being the head of the Commonwealth Games usually is the one to declare the games open. But this time as the Queen had refused there was a dilemma as to who would get the honour? The Indian President or the representative of the Queen Prince Charles?
However a diplomatic conclusion was arrived at and today the Commonwealth Games was declared pen by both the dignitaries in a unique fashion.
