‘Gombe Habba’, a festival of dolls celebrated in this part of a country during Dasara festivities, began here on Saturday. The festival, which is part of unique tradition of this area, was started several centuries ago by the early rulers of Wadiyar Dynasty. It reflects skills of womenfolk and brings the mirth associated with famous Dasara festivities.
The Gombe Habba is part of ‘Navaratra’ during which dolls are arranged in almost all houses.
However, the festival that signifies nine living forms of Goddess Durga and which children anxiously wait for is slowly losing its patronage among women and young children.
Artistically arranged dolls with intricate works showcasing the skills of women are fast disappearing from the traditional homes.
This year the district administration has made a new venture with a new concept of ‘Mane Mane Dasara’ in which every house organizes doll shows. It began on October 1 and has attracted more than 35,000 houses in the city.
District in charge Minister S A Ramadas told that the new concept has received very good response and more than 1,800 prizes have been awarded in various categories.

Vin Sinners (A.K.A Vinesh Nair) started singing in a church choir at the age of 9 because that was his way of getting out of study sessions in boarding school. In 1991, he started writing music and compiled enough material for a full album and named it ‘It’s just Me’ but that never got produced. And that’s another story. The same year, Sinners joined hands with Gerard Brewty and put together a band called ‘Acanthus’ that remained an amateur college band that was inspired by classic 80s rock styling but would often experiment with alternative styles while performing live.
Vin Sinners’ planned to release a debut album with 13 songs that features musicians from various genres of music. The album is called ‘An Element of Surprise’ and while there is no official release date yet, Sinners says that it will be out on Christmas Day, this year
Afaq Ahmed(Bass)
When the bass guitar lights up, you know it is Afaq in the light. Afaq joined Vin Sinners mid way through the project and his incredible ability for supremely technical bass riffs sees simpler music light up.
Nipin Anthraper(Drums)
It just goes to show that size don’t matter.Because if a man that quiet can make that much sound. There’s a physics lesson that needs redrafting. Nipin along with Afaq, a late comer to join Vin Sinners and his creative process – we say ‘better late than never”
Nelson ‘Floyd’ D’Souza
Nelson loves to drop the strings on any floyd rose tremolo bridge and has a sense for feel and melody that one can see come to the fore on tracks such as ‘Return to Solace’. He’s got a growing collection of weaponry that includes a ‘Hofner’ Acoustic, an ‘Ibanez’ and a gorgeous looking ‘Shechter’.
Cmith ‘Magic’ Sarkar
Cmith brings wings to the dove that’s ready to fly and it is those wings he rides on to bring a sense of brilliance to his feel on the keyboards. One of the veterans of our genre from this part of the world, this is the big comeback for not just Sinners but for Cmith too!
