Lokpriya – An Evening of Ghazals with Hariharan will be held on 22nd October 2010 at NCPA Tata Theatre, Mumbai.
In addition to art and semi-classical music, Indian music also finds expression through various categories of light and popular music, which have huge mass appeal and a wide public following.
The concept of rasa-bhava or aesthetic emotion, which is the essence of Indian art philosophy, is clearly realized through the abstract medium of sound complemented with meaningful lyrics as in light and popular music forms such as ghazal, geet etc., which are capable of portraying myriad shades of sentiment.
This edition of Lokpriya series features ghazals with Hariharan, whose versatility ranges from multilingual playback singing for films, fusion and ghazal.
Mentored by his mother Shrimati Alamelu, Hariharan has been trained in Carnatic as well as Hindustani classical music under the guidance of Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Drawing inspiration from the songs of Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh, Hariharan developed a passion for ghazals and went on to master the art along with a rigorous training in Urdu. His playback singing career took off with the debut song directed by the late music director Jaidev for the Hindi film Gaman, for which he won Uttar Pradesh state award as well as a Best Singer National Award nomination. With his fusion album Colonial Cousins, collaboration with some of the great names like A.R. Rahman, Mani Ratnam, Zakir Hussain, as well as several hit ghazal albums and film songs, today Hariharan is one of the most popular figures in the Indian music scene.
Roman Navratri Utsav ’10 is Mumbai’s first ever Navaratri focussing on 9 different social causes. Bhoomi Trivedi is also going to give her best in this event. She belongs to a family that has music inherent in their blood; her father loves to sing while her mother has her own music group. Her elder sister is a trained bharat-natayam dancer. Bhoomi along with her sister and mother are regular performers at Navratri events. Bhoomi started to learn music while she was in 8th grade. She participated regularly in school and college’s competitions that boosted her confidence and made her take up singing seriously.

Mohiniattam by Mumbai-based scholar and dancer Kanak Rele is going to be held at Experimental Theatre, Mumbai on 6th October 2010. And performance by featuring outstanding young dancers from the Nalanda Dance Research Centre.
Kanak Rele is today one of the most distinguished dancer – scholars of India. The President of India has honoured her as “A pioneering dance educationist and top most Mohini Attam exponent.” For the past 35 years she has ceaselessly strived to rejuvenate the classical dance art Mohini Attam of Kerala.
Today her name is synonymous with Mohini Attam. A highly acclaimed exponent, she has performed singly and with her troupe all over India as well as many parts of the world. She is a qualified lawyer who has done research in International Law at the University of Manchester U.K. Her Ph.D. at the faculty of Fine Arts, University of Mumbai was on Mohini Attam.
Trained initially from a very young age in another Kerala art Kathakali under the late guru ‘Panchali’ Karunakara Pannikar, who is regarded as one of the greats for “stree-vesham” in kathakali, kanak has won high acclaim for her rendition of kathakali as well.
Today kanak is equally recognized for her pioneering work in two fields – that of re-establishing the exquisitely lyrical dance Mohini Attam and for introducing new and richer dimensions to the field of academics and research in classical dancing.

The Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI) to be held from September 21st to September 30th at NCPA Mumbai. It is the country’s first fully professional Orchestra formed by the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai on August 2006, offering series concerts in Mumbai over the course of two seasons each year, in September and February. The orchestra has also begun to tour nationally and to take music into communities in order to entertain new and young audiences around India.
The orchestra’s Indian players represent the finest local musical talent, and their presence in the SOI provides a solid foundation for the future of orchestral playing in India. The orchestra has launched a number of initiatives to build on this local talent, including the introduction of the Suzuki Method of instrumental teaching into schools in Mumbai.
The Gala will feature excerpts from Phantom of the Opera, SunsetBoulevard, Evita and a complete performance of the Requiem, and will be held on September 23 and September 24, at 7 pm at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA.

Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the 1990s. Fifteen years ago when Joshua Redman released “Wish“, his second album, the New York Times called him “one of the brightest young stars in mainstream jazz”. Today, he’s well on his way to walking, with his smooth fluid style, into the Jazz Hall of Fame.
The NCPA and Blue Frog joined hands in March 2010 to present the NCPA-Blue Frog Concert Series which was touted to bring quality live music from around the world to Indian audiences. Presenting this month, the legendary Saxophonist Joshua Redman. Redman, son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman, is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the decade of the 1990s. In many ways, Redman is a modern hybrid of Sonny Rollins and Michael Brecker in that his live shows explode with his “restless musical energy”. His horizons are broad, making him a saxophonist of the people, while also maintaining his position as a darling of the critics.
National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) and blue FROG launched the NCPA blue FROG Concert Series to bring quality live music from India and around the world to Indian audiences. The idea was to create a collaboration that will consistently strive to bring in musical acts of an international standard to the city. In March, they presented Jazz guitarist Mike Stern. The Joshua Redman Trio will be their second presentation.
