After 12 Days of a multi-discipline sporting event Common Wealth Games 2010 comes to an end. On the last day of the Commonwealth Games, Delhiites were an enthusiastic lot. The Jawaharlal Stadium and Jangpura Metro stations had been witnessing a steady flow of visitors since 3 pm. “On the day of the opening ceremony, as many as 35,000 to 40,000 people used the Metro to attend it. It may hover around the same level today,” a Metro official said.
The closing ceremony began with the arrival of dignitaries who included the Prime Minister, the vice-president, UPA chairperson, CGF chief Michael Fennell and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the guest of honour.
The Indian national anthem was played as the packed stand stood up in respect to mark the beginning of the closing ceremony.
Flags of the 71 participating nations with ace shooter Gagan Narang holding the Indian tricolor entered the field together as one big dependent, signifying the bonds and friendships formed during the Games.
There was also further entertainment from singers Kailash Kher, Zila Khan, Sukhwinder, Ila Arun, Usha Uthup, Shiamak Davar, Shankar Mahadevan, Shubha Mudgal, Sunidhi Chauhan and Sreeram who belted out some Indian chartbusters.
Many, especially foreigners, simply couldn’t believe everything just fell into place in the last minute.
