PSLV-C16 launch successful

India’s PSLV-C16 rocket on Wednesday successfully launched into orbit the latest remote sensing satellite Resourcesat-2 that would study and help manage natural resources along with two nano satellites.

ISRO’s homegrown workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle placed in a ‘Polar Sun Synchronous Orbit’ Resourcesat-2, Youthsat and X-Sat about 18 minutes after it blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre launch pad here, 90 km from Chennai, at 10.12 am.

“PSLV-C16 Resourcesat-2 mission is successful,” a jubilant Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman K Radhakrishnan announced shortly after all the three satellites were hurled into space one after another 822 km above earth in a text book launch.

The ISRO chief’s announcement was cheered by the battery of scientists at the mission control centre who heaved a sigh of relief as they were gripped by an added anxiety following two successive failures of GSLV missions last year.

The 1,206 kg Resourcesat-2 with a space life of five years replaces Resourcesat-1 launched in 2003 and would provide data with enhanced multispectral and spatial coverage on natural resources.

The GSLV mission in December last year failed when the homegrown GSLV F06 carrying communication satellite GSAT-5P exploded mid-air less than a minute after lift-off and fell into the Bay of Bengal.

GSAT-5P, carrying 24 C-band and 12 extended C-band transponders, plunged into the sea when the destruct command was issued as the rocket veered from its flight path.

Earlier, the GSLV-D3 mission carrying GSAT-4 had also failed in April 2010, dealing a blow to India’s space programme.

Today’s PSLV flight was its 17th successive mission after the failure of its maiden voyage in September 1993.

Did India grow faster than China in 2010?

WASHINGTON: Crouching Tiger snuck past the Fiery Dragon?

The intense debate about whether lumbering India can overtake China’s red hot economy has been fed more fuel with The Economist suggesting that it may already have happened in 2010 “without anyone as much as noticing”.

On the face of it, China grew by 10.3% last year, comfortably outpacing India’s estimate of 8.6%. But the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook released earlier this week says that India grew by 10.4% in 2010. How can that be? Here’s how the acclaimed journal crunches the numbers to arrive at the same conclusion. India typically reports its GDP “at factor cost”, meaning it adds up all the income earned in the course of producing the country’s goods and services. Other countries, including China, typically report their GDP “by expenditure”, i.e. by adding up all the spending (including taxes) on domestically produced goodies.

So, says The Economist in a blog post, you have to factor in a couple of things into the Indian GDP: taxes and subsidies. A sales tax adds to the amount you have to spend on a good. A subsidy has the opposite effect. If these taxes and subsidies remained steady as a percentage of output, they would not affect the growth rate of GDP, even if they do affect its level.

In India, net indirect taxes rose from 7.5% of output in 2009 to 9.2% in 2010, boosting the growth rate of GDP by expenditure for that year. So if New Delhi adopts the same metric as other countries to measure its GDP, i.e., by expenditure, it lifts India’s growth to 10.36% in 2010. “That’s fully 0.06 percentage points faster than China. Jai Hind!” says The Economist.

Not everyone buys into the conclusion. “Brilliant. So all India has to do is increase indirect taxes every year by 1000% and her GDP will go to the moon,” one reader wrote in snarkily. Another maintained that exchange rate is a more important factor than taxes, pointing out that the IMF estimates growth rates by converting the GDP of countries in local currencies to dollar at market exchange. While India’s currency appreciated 6.4% in 2010, from Rs 48.85 per dollar in 2009 to Rs 45.93 in 2010, China’s Renminbi appreciated only 0.9%, from 6.84 per dollar in 2009 to 6.77 in 2010. So India’s GDP got a push that was higher than China’s.

The Economist itself had a tongue-in-cheek take on the whole India versus China growth issue, saying that given the fervid debates “it would be ironic if the moment (of India overtaking China) had already come and gone, without any fuss, fanfare or felicitation”.

Mumbai biggies get Wankhede boxes at a price

Some of the biggest names in the corporate world, politically-connected builders and diamond merchants were allotted 37 hospitality boxes in the newly renovated Wankhede stadium by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) before the World Cup in February.

The fully furnished boxes were given out for ten years and are believed to have fetched the association Rs 3.75-5 crore each. Club insiders said the Sharad Pawar-led MCA invited bids for only 19 boxes and alleged that the remaining ones may have been given away arbitrarily to the well-connected.

The MCA’s bid document, a copy of which was made available to TOI, stipulates that a bidder cannot submit bids for more than two hospitality boxes. TOI contacted several MCA officials, but none wanted to come on record and say if there was a tender process in place at all before giving away these boxes.

* Each corporate box, sold at 3.75-5 crore, has a seating capacity of 15-20. Has chairs and sofas, live TV, a pantry, toilet, modern communication facilities and independent entrance and sitting privacy.

* There are 34 boxes in the south stand and 25 boxes in the north stand.

* The list of allottees includes prominent business groups, politicians, diamond merchants and builders.

* Some have got three boxes. The MCA’s tender document said no one could bid for more than two boxes.

The list shows that Reliance Industries bagged three boxes, Aditya Birla Group got three, while Raymond, Shapoorji Pallonji, Jindal, Sajjan India, Essar, Bajaj, HDFC, TCS, Citibank, HSBC, Kotak Mahindra, Mafatlal, SBI, Gannon Dunkunley, JP Morgan, Nimbus, United Breweries, Naman Developers and Intelnet Global got one each.

Philips divests Philips ops

AMSTERDAM: Dutch consumer electronics giant Philips Electronics said that it would divest its struggling television business as first-quarter net profit came in below expectations.

Philips is transferring its TV business to a joint venture with its partner, global monitor maker TPV.

“Finding a solution for our television business was our top priority and we strongly believe that the intended 30 per cent-70 per cent joint venture with TPV that was announced today will enable a return to profitability for the television business, and an increased portfolio focus for Philips in health and well-being,” said chief executive Frans van Houten in a statement.

Van Houten, a restructuring expert, took over as chief executive on April 1.

Philips said TPV will purchase 70 per cent of the shares in the joint venture for a deferred purchase price, equating to four times the joint venture’s EBIT over the years 2012 until the year Philips exercises its right to receive the purchase price.

Philips also has an option to sell the remaining 30 per cent stake to TPV for the same terms after six years. Once a global leader, Philips TV business has lost its luster and cannot compete with lower-cost rivals.

The unit, which makes up less than 10 per cent of group sales, has become a thorn in the firm’s side, having notched up losses of almost a billion euros since the beginning of 2007.

Philips currently licenses its TVs to TPV in China as well as Funai in the United States and Videocon in India. Philips announced first-quarter net profit of 138 million euros, down 31 per cent from a year ago and below forecasts.

Philips is the world’s biggest lighting maker, a top three hospital equipment maker and Europe’s biggest consumer electronics producer. It competes with General Electric and Siemens in the hospital and lighting markets, and with Samsung and LG Electronics, among others in the TV business.

Indians Against Corruption

You might have heard this on the news – a renowned senior citizen and freedom fighter turned reformer, has gone on a fast unto death to coax the government to draft a transparent anti-corruption act. Requesting you express your support for this cause in Bangalore, Chennai and in other cities across India on April 9 at 430 pm.

This peaceful gathering across India is to let our government know that we truly are fed up with the money and power hungry bureaucracy that is in power! We want change! We Want Accountability!

We will not vote corrupt politicians back into power if this basic expectation is not fulfilled!

Illiterate goons who steal from Indian people are offenders who should be in prison. They are not going to be the ones to create anti corruption laws and acts after the masses give their blood and sweat to pay them bribes for every possible reason.

They are not going to be the ones who help India progress into a developed nation. You are.

Corruption is dead. The funeral celebrations are on 9th April 2010 across India.

Show up at your town or city’s government square to let your voice shape India.

In Bangalore, we meet outside Vidhan Soudha, the seat of the state government’s power.

This Saturday, the 9th of April, let India and the world know that we stand united in the face adversity.

Lets win this for India.

Now control computer by your thoughts

Londan Scientists have developed a computer that can be controlled by the power of thought, a breakthrough which they say could soon help people unable to speak or move.

In tests, reported in the Journal of Neural Engineering, volunteers were found to be able to move a cursor on a screen simply by “saying” words in their heads.

The device, developed by researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine, is believed to have massive implications for patients who have lost the power of speech through brain injury or stroke.

It could also help disabled people control wheelchairs or robotic arms, and could even revolutionise the computer games industry, the researchers said.
