Hoysala Village Resort, Hasan off Bangalore

Hoysala village Resort is setup in a fairly small campus, about 5-6 acres, but every square inch of it is well designed and utilized. Located about about 6 kms from Hasan town on the Belur road Hoysala village resort has about 34 rooms, 4 of which are called Suites and rest are premium cottages. The rooms are spacious enough for a small family. All rooms include a sit out area while suite includes an additional living room. Suites also feature premium paintings and glassware sourced by management from various places. Some cottages are grouped and called as Vataras, which are ideal for large families who’d like to book 4-6 rooms. (Vatara is Kannada name for a group of houses)
Though cottages are close to each other, lot of greenery around won’t let you realize that. A presidential suite was under construction.

Unlike some of the resorts which are located at vantage points (like a hill station or next to a river or in a forest), Hoysala Village Resort appears to be built from scratch on regular roadside property several years ago.

Download GMAT material on iPhone, iPod or iPad

If you are a B-school aspirant preparing for the globally accepted GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) in the near future, you may no longer need to pore over heavy textbooks and question banks. You will soon be able to download the preparation material as an application on your iPhoneiPod or even your iPad, thanks to a tie-up between GMAT and Apple.

Not only will the application allow students to solve questions that are included in the official GMAT test preparation book, including questions that have appeared in previous GMAT exams on your Apple device, but it will also give them a chance to appear for mock tests and compare scores with others using the GMAT app. The application will have an inbuilt timer that will help students keep pace while writing the test.

The device will even track a student’s performance over time. The application is integrated with social media sites such as GMAT’s official blog, as well as its Twitter and Facebook profile.

GMAT has inked the deal with Apple and provided the company with all the necessary inputs. The application will be made available the moment Apple is ready with the product. TOI had access to a test version of the application on an iPhone.

IIM-Calcutta to conduct CAT this year

The country’s most prominent management entrance examination, Common Admission Test (CAT), will be conducted by theIndian Institute of Management- Calcutta in 2011. The switch over of the responsibility took place in March this year.

Faculty at IIM-C Janakiraman Moorthy who has been newly appointed as convener for CAT 2011 said, “The internal process of the taking over of the responsibility is over. Now, we have started working on the modalities of the test for this year. However, it is too early to declare anything concrete on details like what new aspects will be introduced in the test this year and so on.”
Moorthy said that CAT will continue it’s partnership with Prometric for conducting the test online.

While IIM-C will conduct CAT in 2011, IIM-Lucknow will lend them support in the process. Moorthy said, “Though IIM-C will be leading the responsibility for conducting CAT we will be supported by IIM-L. We will be in touch with the rest of the IIMs and get support from them as well in various ways.”

While IIM-Ahmedabad conducted the prestigious examination in 2008 and 2009 in association with IIM-Bangalore, in 2010 the responsibility of the CAT convener was handed over to the IIM-Lucknow.

Android beats Apple, Nokia

Google’s Android platform rose to a dominant position in the smartphone market in the first quarter, research firm Canalys said, increasing its lead over struggling Nokia.

The news underscores how quickly Google, which offers its software to phone makers for free, has raced to the top of the smartphone market — also surpassing Apple Inc.

Google and Apple have revolutionised the smartphone market in just a few years, leaving former market leader Nokia in trouble.

HTCSamsung ElectronicsSony Ericsson,Motorola Mobility and LG Electronics have all bet on Google’s Android to build a strong position in the fast-growing smartphone market.

Canalys said the market for more advanced cellphones grew 83 per cent from a year ago in the January-to-March quarter to 101 million phones.

While Google’s software platform increased its market share to 35 per cent from less than 10 per cent just a year earlier, Nokia’s Symbian saw its market share dropping to 26 per cent from 45 per cent.

Canalys research put Android at the top of the market in the fourth quarter as well, but gap was small and other analysts saw Symbian still holding on to the top spot.

Nokia’s first Windows Phone model is expected to reach consumers, at the earliest, by end-2011. Without Nokia, Windows Phone continued to struggle in the quarter.

Canalys said Samsung shipped some 3.5 million smartphone using its own bada operating system, outperforming total Windows Phone devices sales by more than a million units.

“Samsung’s own operating system development, combined with the branding and investment in its Wave smartphones at mid-tier prices, has led to good uptake in developed markets, such as France, Britain and Germany,” Cunningham said.

World Earth Day 2011 organizers call for ‘a billion acts of green

If the environmental movement has a high holiday, Earth Day is it.

The annual effort to raise public awareness about the environment and inspire actions to clean it up marks its 41st anniversary on Friday, coinciding with the Christian Good Friday and Judaism’s celebration of Passover.

In an effort dubbed “A Billion Acts of Green,” organizers are encouraging people to observe Earth Day 2011 by pledging online at http://act.earthday.org/ to do something small but sustainable in their own lives to improve the planet’s health — from switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs to reducing the use of pesticides and other toxic chemicals.

“Millions of people doing small, individual acts can add up to real change,” said Chad Chitwood, a spokesman for the umbrella group coordinating efforts.

There will be hundreds of rallies, workshops and other events around the United States, where Earth Day was born, and hundreds more overseas, where it is now celebrated in 192 countries.

In the United States the activities range from the premiere of the new film from the director of “Who Killed the Electric Car?” (it’s called “Revenge of the Electric Car”) at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York to a discussion about creating a green economy in 12 cities along the Gulf Coast, where this time last year residents were reeling from the effects of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

In the years since the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 the environmentalist movement made great strides with passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act and other groundbreaking laws.

But the bipartisanship that marked the birth of Earth Day — it was sponsored in Congress by aWisconsin Democrat named Gaylord Nelson and a California Republican named Pete McCloskey — is often missing in discussions about environmental policy today.

Efforts to fight climate change by regulating greenhouse gases, for instance, face fierce resistance from many Republicans and members of the business community, who dispute the science supporting global warming and warn new rules to regulate emissions will kill jobs and raise energy costs.

Sony rebuilding PlayStation Network

PlayStation Network has remained offline as Sony worked to rebuild the service that connected PlayStation 3 (PS3) consoles to games, films, and other digital offerings.

PlayStation Network and Qriocity streaming music service were turned off April 20 in the wake of an “external intrusion,” according to Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold.

“I know you are waiting for additional information on when PlayStation Network and Qriocity services will be online,” Seybold said in a blog post.

“Unfortunately, I don’t have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time.”

Sony shut off PlayStation Network and Qriocity to investigate the breach and bolster defenses, according to Seybold.

“We are working around the clock to bring them both back online,” Seybold said in an update during the weekend.

“Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure.”

Players were still able to take part in games offline on the consoles, but lost the ability to challenge others on the Internet, stream movies, or get other services.

“Well, I hope the rebuilding of your network also helps make certain things on the PSN quicker,” someone using the screen name ‘bigdaddykraven’ said in a chat forum beneath Seybold’s update to the situation.

“First and foremost though, just do what is needed to get secure and get the system up and running.”

Sony did not indicate whether it identified a culprit in the intrusion.

Internet vigilante group Anonymous had vowed retribution against Sony for taking legal action against hackers who cracked PS3 defenses to change console operating software.

A message signed by Anonymous at website anonnews.org early this month announced an “Operation Payback” campaign aimed at Sony because of its cases against the two hackers, one of whom cut a deal to settle the case.

Anonymous argued that PS3 console owners have the right to do what they wish with them, including modifying them.
